Located in central Virginia, George Washington College (GWC) is a non profit engaged in providing continuing education courses and seminars for secondary school teachers who teach civics, government and social studies. GWC grew out of the foundation and success of the Virginia Institute for American History –formerly known as the Washington, Jefferson & Madison Institute (WJMI). Our Charter is “To Perpetuate the Study of the Teachings and Examples of the Founders of the Republic.” We have been sponsoring continuing education seminars for teachers for over 16 years since 2007. Since then, we have organized and sponsored twenty-five (25) teacher seminars, held at at James & Dolley Madison’s Montpelier, Christopher Newport University, and at historic Prospect Hill near Louisa, Virginia.
Located in the heart of Orange County, in the Somerset area, our proposed future campus is a historic estate situated on 63 acres in Somerset, Orange County, Virginia – just 10 minutes from Montpelier, the home of James Madison. Built c. 1823 for Philip Barbour, Associate Justice for the Supreme Court by John Perry, known for his work for Thomas Jefferson in building the University of Virginia and Monticello. Large rooms for classes, bedrooms for visitors.
At George Washington College, we offer continuing education courses for government, civics, social studies and history teachers based on Thomas Jefferson & James Madison’s curriculum for teaching the Constitution:
• The political writings of John Locke & Algernon Sidney
• The Declaration of Independence
• The Federalist Papers
• Washington’s Farewell Address
We also offer courses on topics such as: The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution, Religion and the Founding of the American Republic, and The Lives and Writings of America’s Founding Fathers. We focus on primary sources.
